กฏการเติม ing ที่ท้ายกริยา ( Gerund or ing form)

หรือ ing form ได้แก่รูปแบบการเติม ing ที่ท้ายคำกริยาเพื่อนำไปใช้ในประโยค present continuous และ past continuous และ เพื่อสร้างคำนาม (noun) จากการคำกริยา (verb) มีหลักการเติม ดังนี้

1.   คำกริยาทั่วไป เติม ing ได้ทันที เช่น sleep = sleeping , visit = visiting , watch = watching , play = playing stay = staying เป็นต้นฯ

2.   คำกริยาที่ลงท้ายด้วย e (ตัวเดียว) ให้ลบ e ทิ้งก่อนเติม ing เช่น write = writing , make = making , come = coming / drive = driving , move = moving เป็นต้นฯ

3.   คำกริยาที่ลงท้ายด้วย ee (สองตัว) ให้เติม ing ได้ทันที เช่น  see = seeing , agree = agreeing , free = freeing

4.   คำกริยาที่เป็นคำพยางค์เดียว มีสระและพยัญชนะสะกดตัวเดียว มีเสียงสั้น ให้ซ้อนพยัญชนะตัวที่เหมือนกันกับตัวสะกดเพิ่มอีกหนึ่งตัว ก่อนเติม ing เช่น cut = cutting , sit = sitting , swim = swimming , hit = hitting , put = putting เป็นต้นฯ

5.   คำกริยาที่ลงท้ายด้วย ie ให้เปลี่ยน ie เป็น y ก่อนเติม ing เช่น lie = lying , die = dying , tie = tying
